SYFY's final (for now) original sci-fi series is finally coming back - and it's well worth watching
After two years, The Ark is finally ready to take flight again.
The SYFY cable network (formerly SCIFI, formerly the Sci Fi Channel) has a storied history when it comes to science fiction television. It’s the network that brought us Farscape and Battlestar Galactica. The network that launched The Expanse (before it moved to Amazon), and turned Stargate SG-1 into a hit (after it actually first launched on Showtime).
It’s also the network that gave us a ton of fan favorites and genre-friendly hits, including Warehouse 13, Eureka, Dark Matter, Haven, 12 Monkeys, Defiance, Z Nation and so, so, so many more (I’m still bummed they canceled Alan Ritchson’s Blood Drive!). But now, the network that used to have a Friday night block of sci-fi hits and multiple nights of originals, plus original films every Saturday night, is down to just one original series (at least for now).
And that show is finally coming back to the airwaves this summer.
So what is it? It’s The Ark, a future-set sci-fi series about the crew of a spaceship trying to survive and find a new planet for the last survivors of Earth to call home. The series first premiered in 2023, with a second season that hit in 2024. But with larger corporate machinations taking place in 2025 (tl;dr: NBCUniversal spun off its cable networks, including SYFY, into a new company), the third season was pushed all the way into summer 2026. Thankfully, summer 2026 has finally arrived.
Once the dust settled, that left The Ark as the only original series still standing on the slate for SYFY. For those keeping score: The (great!) horror series Revival, based on the comic of the same name, aired in 2025, but there’s been no word on a potential renewal. The cult hit SurrealEstate also aired its last season in 2025, but it has been officially canceled.
Which is all to say: The Ark is all that’s left, for now.
The Ark is a throwback sci-fi series
If you’re unfamiliar, The Ark was created and co-showrun by two legends in the sci-fi space, Dean Devlin (Independence Day) and Jonathan Glassner (Stargate SG-1). The pair have essentially partnered to create a throwback sci-fi show about a crew and a ship taking on all types of adventures in deep space. It’s the core tenets of the genre.
If you want to catch up, I’ve just realized the first two seasons are streaming for free right now on Fandango at Home (it had been on Peacock until recently). So, it’s an easy binge!
Though it might seem odd to recommend jumping into a series on its third season, the show is really at the point now where its figured itself out and hit its stride. Season 1 featured the growing pains of a crew just waking up in space. Season 2 saw the team find a planet to serve as a home base, with the rest of the crew setting out to respond to distress calls and missions across the galaxy.
Season 3? It’s time for high adventure and mystery.
The first Season 3 trailer (the new season premieres July 29) looks like a rollicking good time, and the show’s vibe and spirit taps into elements that should be familiar to anyone who has watched a SYFY original series the past few decades. There’s the bantering team aspect of SG-1, the space mystery and adventure of shows like Farscape, Killjoys and Dark Matter, all done with a wink and a nod that takes its storytelling seriously but not too seriously.
Which honestly, it’s only fitting that The Ark channels the spirit of what has made so many SYFY shows great over the years. If there’s one show that is left standing to hold down the fort for SYFY originals, at least it’s a show that’s truly a science fiction adventure in the classic mold. The show has tackled space mysteries, alternate universes, cloning, corporate espionage and all the trappings of the genre through its first two seasons.
Season 3 looks to go even further, and looks incredibly fun.
That said — I sincerely don’t think The Ark will be the last SYFY original series. There’s been no word on what might be in development, but you’d have to think the network is getting a few irons back in the fire now that the dust has settled. But if you like the old SYFY, and sci-fi, shows of yore? It really is worth jumping in (and catching up).
You still have plenty of time before Season 3.

I'll let you know how it goes 😏
I'll admit I didn't like the 1st series and thought it'd been cancelled. I found the two young geeks annoying who had to wear glasses and talk really really fast to demonstrate they were the science nerds.
But I don't have much to watch in July so will give series 1 another go and watch 2nd on NowTV in UK....hope its worth it 🙂
